Normal Dog Behavior

In previous articles, we have discussed on what to consider when bringing a pet to your home and how to choose a dog breed that matches your lifestyle.

Once you’ve open your home to your new pet, you have to understand its habits and behaviors. Dogs specially have different behavior pattern that can tip you off of certain health situations both physical and mental.

Dogs usually go through different stages in their lives, just like us humans. A puppy growing up, a dog that is impregnate, a dog growing mature in age are some of the stages a dog goes through in its life span and due to these changes it might change its habits and behaviors.

Most of the time you can spot if your dog is going through a certain stage in its life or having a health related issue by its behavior towards eating. A young dog growing up tends to eat a lot. If your dog is constantly asking for food even after being fed this could be a health reason either physical of emotional. If the dog is eating its food unnaturally fast, this could also be a sign of a disorder, however if this is done in the company of several other dogs being fed at the same time it is an instinctive behavior.

It’s natural for your dog to bark excessively or dig holes in your back yard as these are all natural habitat of the species, however if you do want to control this, some training will help.

Most important tip to remember is that dogs repeat actions that we have shown positive responses to, therefore you have a control over its both good and bad habits. For instance, if your dog jumps into your couch and you greet them or give a pat, this is an indication that you approve of that behavior. Therefore, if this is the sort of behavior you don’t want make sure that you indicate to the animal that you’re not happy with this. Yelling at your dog often will not help so try to take away the reasons behind the cause of the issue.

Just the same when your dog does something that you want him/her to continue, reward the dog to indicate that.

Never kick, slap or yell at your dog as this will not stop any problem behavior your dog might be having. Remember dogs love their masters even when they are being abused which is a unique characteristic of the specie, so love them and teach them to be the best companion they can be.
